The connection between nutrition and mental health is something therapists understand deeply and it’s a relationship that often goes overlooked. What we eat and how we move affects our mental health in profound ways. Nutrition and physical movement are essential partners to traditional therapy; in fact, they go hand in hand.
The science behind nutrition and mental health is compelling. The foods we eat influence neurotransmitter production, blood sugar stability, and overall energy levels – all of which play a significant role in mood, focus, and stress response. The gut-brain connection is a powerful one: when we nourish our bodies well, we create a stronger foundation for emotional and psychological wellbeing. Similarly, regular physical movement reduces cortisol (the stress hormone), boosts endorphins, and improves sleep quality which supports the emotional work done in therapy.
Taking care of your body allows you to truly show up for yourself, in and out of the therapy room.
